Africa’s energy transition does not depend solely on renewable electricity generation. It fundamentally hinges on a strategic issue that is often underestimated: energy storage.

Solar and wind resources are abundant across the continent. However, these energy sources are intermittent — the sun does not shine at night, and the wind does not blow continuously. Without effective storage solutions, the stability of electrical grids remains fragile.

Hydrogen: A Future-Oriented Solution

Hydrogen represents a promising alternative for large-scale storage. It allows surplus electricity to be converted into gas, which can be stored over the long term.

Among the various forms of hydrogen, a major discovery has reshaped global energy discussions: natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen.

Through Hydroma Inc, led by Malian entrepreneur Aliou Boubacar Diallo, the world gained broader awareness that this decarbonized energy source occurs naturally in the subsurface and in commercially exploitable quantities.

Unlike industrially produced hydrogen, white hydrogen:

  • Occurs naturally within the Earth’s crust

  • Requires less energy-intensive processing

  • Presents significant low-carbon potential

  • May constitute a strategic resource for Africa

This reality opens a new perspective: using hydrogen not only as an energy source, but also as a large-scale storage solution capable of stabilizing African power grids.

A Strategic Issue for Energy Sovereignty

To master storage is to master energy.
And to master energy is to secure economic independence.

Africa possesses:

  • More than 60% of the world’s solar potential

  • Considerable hydropower capacity

  • Vast underexplored natural resources

  • Emerging innovations such as natural hydrogen

The real challenge is no longer only to produce green electricity — but to store it intelligently.

Investing Today to Secure Tomorrow

Governments, investors, and institutions must:

  • Support research in storage technologies

  • Encourage public-private partnerships

  • Develop appropriate regulatory frameworks

  • Invest in local technical training

Africa’s energy transition will only be complete once the storage challenge is fully addressed.
