DATA CENTERS
THE HIDDEN ENVIRONMENTAL COST OF OUR DIGITAL REVOLUTION

FOR AFRICA, THE CHOICE IS STRATEGIC.
We need data centers.
We need artificial intelligence.
We need digital sovereignty.
But we also need water, clean energy, and protected ecosystems.
The challenge, therefore, is not to choose between digital development and the environment.
The challenge is to build a model where both move forward together.
☀️ Renewable energy
💧 Responsible water management
🔋 Energy storage
♻️ Infrastructure efficiency
🌱 Protection of ecosystems and territories
The digital world of tomorrow must be intelligent.
But it must also be sustainable.
👉 Before asking how much data we can process, let us ask ourselves how many natural resources we are willing to consume to process it.

Behind every search, every video, every piece of stored data, and every query sent to artificial intelligence, there are data centers running 24/7.
⚡ Thousands of servers to power.
💧 Cooling systems to operate.
🏗️ Infrastructure to build.
🌍 Natural resources to mobilize.
And with the rapid expansion of AI, this pressure is increasing.
The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers could consume nearly 945 TWh of electricity per year by 2030, more than double their 2024 consumption.
But electricity is only part of the equation.
There is also water.
In some cooling technologies, water is used to remove the heat generated by servers.
So let us ask ourselves:
💧 What happens when these infrastructures are built in regions where water is already scarce?
And another question is becoming unavoidable:
⚡ What kind of energy do we want to power the digital world of tomorrow?
If this energy comes largely from fossil fuels, our digital revolution could also contribute to increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
